TEMPORAL BONE LABORATORIES

The study of the human temporal bone is a time-consuming, expensive, and challenging process. Laboratories which are dedicated to the study of pathological aspects of ear disorders are highly specialized.

A Short History

In 1976 there were 28 "active" laboratories in the United States. These laboratories were continually collecting, processing and studying temporal bones, some on their own and some with the assistance of a National Temporal Bone Bank Program (NTBB). Major advances in the understanding of ear disease, including were made during this time of abundant temporal bone research. Over the years, however, the number of active investigators in the area of temporal bone research fell to nearly half the number.

Temporal Bone Labs Today

Today, there are 27 temporal bone laboratories in the United States. While all of these laboratories possess temporal bone collections, only fifteen are actively collecting, processing and studying temporal bone specimens. Detailed information on all the collaborating temporal bone laboratories can be found through the links below. There is detailed information available on the 9 active and 18 inactive collaborating laboratories.
