TEMPORAL BONE RESEARCH

Additional Information

The collection and study of well documented pathologic human temporal bones is essential for continued progress in elucidating disease processes of hearing, balance, and facial nerve function, for validation of clinical diagnoses during life, and to assess the efficacy of medical and surgical treatment. Newly developed techniques in molecular biology can be applied, both to freshly acquired and, in some cases, to archivally stored pathologic human temporal bones. Scientific study of the human temporal bone is a time-consuming, expensive, and challenging process. Laboratories which are dedicated to the study of pathological aspects of ear disorders are highly specialized.

This is one set of temporal bone slides. A finished set consists of 40 microscope slides made from taking every 10th slide from the 400 consecutive slides
Today, there are 26 temporal bone laboratories in the United States. While all of these laboratories possess temporal bone collections, only fifteen are actively collecting, processing and studying temporal bone specimens. To read about the collaborating temporal bone laboratories see Temporal Bone Labs.
